Patrick McMurtray, Deputy Chief of Legal Counsel

Deputy Chief of Legal Counsel Patrick McMurtray brings 40 years of legal experience and a long history of service to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office and the Rutherford County community.

A graduate of the University of Mississippi, Deputy Chief McMurtray has developed a national legal practice representing both corporations and individuals in complex business and litigation matters. He is licensed to practice in Tennessee state and federal courts, as well as federal appellate courts, including the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Supreme Court of the United States, and the U.S. Court of Federal Claims. He is also admitted to practice in three additional states.

Deputy Chief McMurtray has a longstanding connection to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office. He previously served as an RCSO Reserve Deputy, provided legal counsel to the Sheriff’s Office on matters involving 501(c)(3) nonprofit projects, and served as President of the Sheriff’s Office Citizens Academy Association.

In addition to his work with the Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Chief McMurtray currently serves as President of the Christiana Volunteer Fire Department, continuing his commitment to serving the community and supporting public safety.

As Deputy Chief of Legal Counsel, McMurtray will provide legal guidance to the Sheriff and command staff on matters affecting the operation of the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office. He is committed to helping ensure the agency operates with professionalism, accountability, transparency, and a strong commitment to serving the citizens of Rutherford County.
