Each non-injury and minor injury traffic crashes that occur in Rutherford County outside the city limits will be investigated by sheriff’s deputies. Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers investigate crashes involving injuries and fatalities.

Drivers involved in the crash should receive the Owner/Driver Report. This form does not require insurance information. This document must be completed and sent to the Tennessee Department of Safety Homeland Security within 20 days of the crash.

Failure to file this report with the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security may result in the suspension of the driver’s license. If the form was not received at the scene of accident, please click here. Drivers may print the form, complete it and mail it to the address noted on the form. Keep a copy for your records.

Incident reports are written about most complaints or when people call the Sheriff’s Office. It is crucial to provide the reporting deputy with complete identification information on any suspects.

About 1,500 to 2,000 reports are received and entered into the system each month. These reports are used for statistics and investigative reasons. It also allows the Sheriff’s Office to know where the crimes are being committed to focus patrol units in the area. The reports are submitted to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the FBI.
